Those are the data materials we used:

Weather Chart

Using the weather chart at the 500hPa, 850hPa and the surface, find out the temperature, distribution of low pressure, and whether the front is formed or not.

-500hPa chart: Find out the distribution of trough aloft and ridge, temperature using cold pool and warm pool, and the distribution of low pressure.

850hPa chart: Check out the horizontal temperature gradient upper wind.

surface chart : Check out whether the front is formed or not, and the distribution of the temperature.

Skew-T Log-P Diagram

Find out the vertical temperature distribution and temperature gradient, dry air penetration, and CAPE.

Checking the freezing level will be helpful because if the freezing level is lower, ice crystal can be maintained longer so that it is easier to create hailstones.

Using the Skew-T Log-P diagram and Fawbush-Miller hail size nomogram, we can compare the real observed hail size and the hail size estimated with the nomogram.

Weather Radar

KakaoTalk_20191118_060251368.png

The Doppler radar detects how strongly backscattering occurs. The reflective time is measured to determine the distance and determine the strength of the precipitation by the amount of energy. The more red you get, the stronger the precipitation occurs, and the more black it appears when a hail phenomenon occurs.

Cloud Top Altitude & Cloud Top Temperature

Cloud is hard to figure out only with satellite image, so firstly we understand the cloud form roughly using the radar, and then discriminate the specific cloud shape, such as vertical structure with cloud top altitude and cloud top temperature. We will use those informations to estimate the precipitation. If the cloud top temperature is low or the cloud top altitude is high, the cloud is deeply developed at vertical direction.

Atmospheric Instability Index

Some examples of the instability index are CAPE, KI, SSI, TTI. Using those various indice representing atmospheric instability, we will figure out the value if various atmospheric instability index at the real hail situation, and confirm that hail is a phenomena occurred by instable atmosphere.
