Motivation & Goals

Motivation

Every year, hail has caused human and physical damage. It is difficult to predict the hail because it is a medium-sized weather phenomena which has short duration period and small space scale. It is commonly known that hailstones are made by the growth of crystals through repeated up and down motions in strong updraft. However, not all convections can form hailstones. Therefore, we want to analyze some of the past hail phenomena and find out the specific conditions that can generate hailstones using various materials.

Goals

(1) Type classification of past hail phenomena
(2) Correlation between hail and atmospheric instability
(3) Correlation between wind shear between layers
